Liechtenstein returned to the theme of still life in his paintings and prints of the mid-1970's by exploring traditional composition and subject matter.  In addition to using standard still life objects in these compositions, the artist began to insert representations of his own works or those by others such as Matisse, Leger and Morris Louis.  This print is from a series entitled 'Six Still Lifes'  in which Lichtenstein presented a variety of still life types.  Here the conventions of old master still life painting, a dish of fruit, a single lemon and a curtain used as a framing device are joined by a portrait of a woman who resembles Lichtenstein's own idealized beauties from the romance comics paintings of the 1960's. Roy Lichtenstein was the master of the stereotype, and the most sophisticated of the major Pop artists in terms of his analysis of visual convention and his ironic exploitation of past styles. This fabulous MINT condition lithograph and screenprint with debossing on Rives BFK paper is archivally framed by master framers and was part of the Lichtenstein private collection. It is signed and numbered AP 13/14 '74.
